The difference between “no” and “not”

Being frankly to everyone who reads my blog, I’m not a native speaker of English. This makes me understand how confusing the English can be when we learn to command the grammar of English. Of course, she is the inspiration of this article.

In this article, I intend to share some understandings of mine on the difference between “no” and “not”. In essence, these two words have the same meaning and give a negative meaning of a sentence. It is the usage of these two words that make the difference.

The usage of “not” is in following condition:
1.   It is used after auxiliary verb. Auxiliary verb is a of form of be (is, are, was and were), have or a modal verb (e.g.  must, can, could, would.)
2.   Example:
· I have not met her since the last gathering.
·       I am not feeling well today.
·  She might not be free on this coming Friday.

The usages of “no” are in the following conditions:
1.   It is used before a noun or an adjective + noun.
Example:
- No one is allowed to enter the hall.
- There are no new cars in that residential area.
2.   When we use “no” to answer a question.
        Example:
Q: Haven’t you read that chapter before?
A: No, I have not had any time to read it.
3. When it is used in the comparative adjective.
Example:
The ruler you have is no longer than mine.

Here are the some differences in using the words “not” and “no” from my own understanding. Hope this sharing is helpful to you all. As a reminder, everyone is welcomed to comment and correct me. Thanks.

After writing this article, only then I know how badly I'm to miss her to correct me whenever I have made an error in my grammar.
